I doubt it's a setting, a firmware issue (even though an update for my older Sony desktop firmware that supposed to "Fixes an issue with CD recognition" on it's "Pioneer® DVR-108 DVD±RW Drive", but checking that as well), etc., but trying everything to rule it down to completely just the drive. I also want to try what I can to try and make sure that if I get a new drive I won't have the same issues with that drive as I did with the one I have currently (basically making sure that it is the drive only - i.e.: a faulty drive on the original). I'm thinking it's the drive as well, but wanted to try and cover every base and idea I could prior to considering replacement of a new drive (as it's only been used a handful of times) with another drive.
You may want to wait a bit though and see if anyone else replies that ran into an issue like this caused by drivers, but doubtful. If one part works but another does not, replacing the drive fixed it every time.

I don't know of any driver issue that would cause it to read DVDs but not Blueray disks, the driver issues I have seen with optical drives are all or nothing. But other than that, it has everything it needs to play blu-rays and has once before, but isn't now. issue before replacing it with a new one to avoid having the same issue.
There are 2 lasers on my drive and I assume that the one for the blu-ray one is bad, but want to make sure it's not just a driver, etc. I had this on a Sony laptop with a Blu-ray drive, without the codec installed it refused to acknowledge a Blu-ray video disc

If it tries to play it but errors out because of the software or media rights, that is something else.ĭo you have any software to play Blu-rays installed? Unless your system came with Blu-ray player software you will need to purchase one as Sony charge for the use of Blu-ray codec and I never found a free player. If your drive does not even see that there is a disk in the drive, or get far enough that it tries to play it is one thing. Is that the issue you are having? Playing the disk is a bit different than not reading it. it not that it can't read the disk, it can't play it.

Is there anything else I can try before considering replacing a drive that I've only used less than a handful of times (it plays everything except for Blu-Ray)? And if I have to replace the drive, what Blu-Ray read and write drives can I use that is SATA connection and has the eject button in the same spot? Also, if I do replace the drive, will Windows automatically install the drivers for the drive, or will I have to search for and download them? I've even looked for firmware updates on Sony, but it says none are available. The device manager has it listed as "Optiarc BD Rom BC-5500H." I have all the updates from the Sony site and the Windows updates as well. I have went through the device manager, uninstalled the drive and rebooted the computer and that still doesn't work. I have recently installed a new hard drive with more space and have tried both the new drive and the old drive with no luck. All in total I've used the drive like around 5 times (most of my programs are on a network drive that I install them from). I have only burned 3 DVD's (the recovery discs), and played maybe 2 regular discs and part of a Blu-Ray disc when I first got the computer. However when I insert a Blu-Ray disc (have tried several) the disc spins, and you hear a sound of it trying to read the disc, but in my computer and the Blu-Ray player program (Corel WinDVD BD), it shows no disc inserted. The drive plays CD's and DVD's without any problem, and writes to CD-R and DVD+/-R discs. I have a Sony Vaio VPCF132FX with a Optiarc BD Rom BC-5500H drive (with file version.
